An American bride and English groom tying the knot in a Lisbon vineyard wedding - sounds like something straight out of a film, doesn't it? But this was no movie; I had the pleasure of jetting off to Portugal to capture two of the loveliest people getting married, with their nearest and dearest in tow to celebrate in style.
Quinta de Sant'ana has been my stomping ground a few times now, and it never fails to impress. This vineyard venue near Lisbon is a photographer's playground - all colour, character, and charm. It's a dream for couples after that stylish destination wedding vibe.
As the big day rolled around, I made my way from my accommodation on the Atlantic coastline, heading inland to the Portuguese countryside. In the bridal suite, Shannon was surrounded by her family and bridesmaids, donning a Jesus Peiro dress that had a trick up its sleeve - or should I say, cape. You'll see what I mean in the pics. It was a stunner, as evident from the bridesmaids' reactions. The vibrant bouquet was the perfect finishing touch.
One of my favourite moments? When Shannon met her dad in the driveway. His face lit up as he saw her approach with her bridesmaid in tow. They'd hired a vintage green convertible MG - a nod to the British groom, perhaps? It made for a pretty sweet ride as father and daughter made their way to meet Matthew at the altar.
The Catholic ceremony was held in a grand local church in Gradil. As I arrived with the bridesmaids, I couldn't help but be drawn in by the building's grandeur. Outside, Matthew and the guests mingled while the final floral touches were added inside. When Shannon glided down the aisle, Matthew looked on in awe. A quick handshake with Matthew and her dad, and it was time for these two to get hitched, courtesy of their eccentric priest who kept things joyful.
Post-ceremony, the newlyweds led their confetti-covered guests through the village streets. I don't think the couple's smiles faltered once during that walk - or the whole day, for that matter.
Back at the venue, the band was in full swing for the drinks reception. Guests sipped wine from the Lisbon vineyard and nibbled on local Portuguese treats. Matthew kicked off the speeches on the venue steps, with Shannon by his side. As he turned to his wife for his final words, you could see how perfectly matched they were. There might've been a tear or two in the crowd.
Portraits at Quinta de Sant'ana are always a breeze - you're spoilt for choice with all the colourful backdrops. The couple wanted a group shot with everyone who'd made the long journey, so I gathered everyone on the steps. The resulting cheer probably echoed all the way to Spain!
Dinner was held in a mercifully cool building - a welcome respite from the heat of this summer Lisbon vineyard wedding. The newlyweds made their grand entrance, followed by speeches from the father of the bride, maid of honour, and best man, all interspersed with more delicious food and wine. Laughter and full bellies all round.
As night fell, the couple cut the cake, and it was time for the first dance in the venue's courtyard. I have to say, it's one of my favourite shots of the two - the deep blue sky, bright yellow building, burnt red foliage creeping up the walls, and Shannon & Matthew, absolutely on cloud nine. How do you top that? With a father-daughter dance, featuring one very proud dad. Then everyone piled inside for more dancing, with Matthew and his mum kicking things off as the DJ took control. The night was young, and these folks were ready to party!
I hope you love this wedding as much as I did photographing it. If you like this one then definitely check out Claire & Damien’s portugal wedding at the same venue. Looking for another stylish wedding then go take a look at Laura & Chris’s black tie wedding in Hampshire.
