South West Wedding Photographer of the Year 2020

Last week was the Wedding Industry awards for the South West region, and I only went and WON it! I'm over the moon and still in a state of shock, but I can’t tell you how much this means to me. 🙂

I want to say a big thank you to all the couples I’ve been lucky enough to get to know this year. Thank you for voting for me in the first round, I can’t wait to read your comments after the National awards in January.

Weddings are extraordinary, you meet a couple for probably only one day of their entire life, but it feels like you have a connection long after that day has passed. I don’t think I would do this job if it weren’t for you all, it is always so lovely to be to get to know you all. It is also incredible to witness all the love displayed from your family & friends on the day, and I feel very privileged to document that.

A recent wedding I helped photograph has got me thinking of the importance of wedding photography. The bride is terminally ill, and the images from the day will be so important to her partner and family going forward.

I sometimes think other industries maybe belittle wedding photography, but I couldn’t disagree with this more! The fashion or advertising industry might be perceived to be higher quality, but the images created will be forgotten in a blink of the eye. Not all wedding photographs will resonate. But, there will be a few photographs from a day that will be LOVED. We are all on this earth for such a short time that a picture can be a perfect way of remembering that person who has since left us.

Anyway, I’ll let you know how I get on for the national awards on the 15th of January. Win or lose; I’m pretty ecstatic to have got my 3rd South West award! Congratulations to the excellent Joab Smith Photography & Ryan Gold photography for winning the highly recommended. And all the other winners of the night!

Also big thank you to The Wedding Industry Awards for putting on such a fantastic award each year. They do get better and better, and it’s quite right that so many talented wedding suppliers get the accolades and their moment in the spotlight. Can’t say I’m looking forward to listening back to my post-award interview as I think I am definitely better behind the camera.

It's been fun to go through all my images from the past couple of years. I've tried to include some from last year as I didn't have time in 2018 for one of these. It would be great to hear your thoughts on either the images or words below.

Also if you’re still up for viewing more photographs of recent weddings then definitely check out Judith & Daniel’s Le Mas de Montet wedding or Laura & Suzie’s Chateau de Lisse wedding.

If anyone knows a friend or family member getting married and are still in search of a wedding photographer, then I’ve got a few dates still available for 2020.

"We booked Richard to photograph our wedding in June 2022, and can honestly say that it was one of the best decisions we made, as his photos are absolutely beautiful and perfectly encapsulate the spirit of our day."
